You Should Smile More
‘You Should Smile More’ interrupts the expected ‘normalcy’ of seemingly banal portrait settings and introduces grotesque, painted smiles on its female subjects. As the title suggests, these images play with gender stereotypes and sexist commentary that typically tell women and girls that to ‘keep the peace’, they need to smile and appease the male gaze. By taking the cultural expectation placed on feminine appearance literally and to the extreme, ‘You Should Smile More’ creates a counter-narrative to the ‘subtle’ aggression behind telling women and girls how to appear by challenging the expectations of a ‘smile’.
